Overview
The inaugural Wyches & Wizards comes about after Chasing after the Sorcerer for his cauldron to apply some more devious magic...
Description
Heading south along the Bristol & Bath Railway Path to Bitton where you turn off and head to the Chew Valley and up onto The Mendips passing the source of the Chew. As you make your way to the West Wiltshire Downs you will spy Glastonbury Tor and Alfred's Tower in the mystical heartlands of Wessex.
After stopping at Maiden Bradley's Pantry for some fine cake (or savouries) head back through Longleat to then skirt Frome. Passing through Great Elm there is Tedbury Camp in the woods; in which a cluster of surviving Wych Elms hold on. Now head over yet more #wills_hills to Wellow; before finishing off on the Colliers Way to the 2Tunnels and once again the Bristol & Bath Railway Path back to the Arrivee.
And the magic I bestow on you? Views, lots of views!
Caution: A section of the NCN Colliers Way from Wellow to Midford is unpaved and can get muddy. I have done this on 25mm tyres in the past.
Reviews
What others think.
Excellent route, really enjoyable, great views.
Quiet roads, lots of hills, good fun. Friendly audax riders all having a good time.
Challenging and rewarding
A challenging and rewarding route, with some stiff climbs and fantastic views.
What a stunning route
A beautiful scenic route on lovely quiet lanes. Very well organised. Lots of Wills Hills but a nice flat run in from Wellow at the end. We’d recommend having a coffee stop at Rocky Mountain garden centre in Maesbury to keep the legs well fuelled until the official control at Maiden Bradley. We were also very grateful for 28mm tyres are there are plenty potholes
Chasing Sorcerer 2026
Second time out for me on this ride and my comments have to be the same as 2025. A challenging ride with spectacular rewards. Well done Will and thanks chap
Lovely route, spoilt only by poor road surfaces
The route takes some quiet roads south through some beautiful hills. The only issue is that the road surfaces are sometimes bad, or even very bad, and there was still lots of water on some of them despite it not having rained for 2 weeks. The organisation was spot on.
