Overview
In memory of Jon Banks, a much-loved friend and cycling companion in Audax Club Bristol and across the Audax Community, who died suddenly in 2025.
Description
Based on Jon's classic North Wessex Downs event, we roll east from Bristol across the Cotswolds before arriving at the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
White Horses, natural downlands and historic Marlborough all feature on 100km riding through some of the best of our region's countryside. After a village hall stop for tea and cake, we roll west into the setting sun before crossing the Cotswolds once more for a well earned finish.

Great Challenge
2023 was a very cold year for the ride and biggest challenge for me alongside the tiredness but the route and stops were excellent and the daylight was enough of a boost to keep me going. Thanks so much!
The best audaxes are about people not points
This was a fantastic ride for reasons I didn’t expect. The route and scenery (as well as the moonlit night sky and the early morning sunshine) exceeded expectations. The overnight temperature was freezing, so wrapping up was very important. The really impressive thing about the event was the people: the volunteers and organisers were encouraging, positive and friendly. I arrived way too late to collect my Brevet card, and for various reasons to do with overpacing and GPS device failure, didn’t make the time cut off. But I still got around, and, as Will pointed out as he was locking the gate at the finish just as I arrived, completing these distances is an achievement in itself. And there’s always next year!
The ups and downs extreme audaxing
I had an amazing time suffering with type 2 fun, traveling the whole length of this ride.
Not for the faint-hearted, this ride is very hard in every way possible.
It’s a masterpiece in audax form.
Will has done a brilliant job creating the most challenging and spectacular ride, that takes in some of the hardest roads within the 3 countries that we traveled through.
If you like a challenge and 600km is not enough, take a look and consider it as your next big challenge.
Lovely interesting route
Lots of varied countryside with great views, particularly at the top of zig zag hill! Some nice cycle route sections appreciated to avoid the traffic! Controls were very helpful semi food and filling water bottles etc. Nice to have the entry into Bath by the two tunnels and the cycle path cool down. Overall an excellent ride! Will puts a lot of effort in to organising these and then has to spend a day waiting for everyone to get back. Much appreciated.
Elite level audaxing
The UK’s toughest audax? Absolutely! One of the best experiences I’ve had on a bicycle? Definitely! Would I recommend it? 100%, but make sure you haven’t bitten off more than you can chew.
